The LimbIC Chair
The Game-Changing Chair
Many people believe there’s a single ‘perfect’ seated posture we should aim to maintain throughout the day. But in reality, that’s a myth. Life is movement—and movement is life. As humans, we’re not rooted to the ground; we’re built to move. As Peter Opsvik, a pioneer in ergonomic chair design, wisely said: “The best posture is the next posture.”
Doctor Posture is proud to be the UK distributor of the groundbreaking LimbIC Chair—a major innovation in seating design—available to experience at our Marylebone clinic in London.
Until now, each LimbIC Chair has been custom-built to suit the individual’s dimensions (height, weight, leg length, etc.) and even their personality, using bespoke carbon fibre shells. Now, thanks to a new crowdfunding initiative, a more affordable ‘off-the-shelf’ range is in development—making this revolutionary seating technology accessible to many more people.

Why is Sitting a Problem?
Doctor Posture, author of The Owner’s Guide to the Body, argues that humans were never designed to sit in the way we do today. Historically, chairs symbolised power—think of thrones, ‘chairmen’ of boards, and endowed academic ‘chairs’. It wasn’t until the 16th century that sitting became common among the general population.
The widespread belief that one must “park” the body to fully engage the mind in work, study, or creative pursuits is fundamentally flawed. Traditional chairs are static devices that encourage physical inactivity and limit natural movement.
Recent research supports what Doctor Posture has been saying for over 30 years: sitting isn’t just ‘not ideal’—it can be actively harmful. The consequences go beyond physical issues like muscle atrophy, high blood pressure, and elevated blood sugar; prolonged sitting can also have a negative impact on mental wellbeing.
Feel Better Sitting Down
Blending cutting-edge neuroscience with ergonomic design, the chair recognises the body as an essential extension of the brain and nervous system, rather than an inconvenient add-on.
Created by Dr Kunzler, it’s the only chair that actively supports movement in all directions, thanks to its unique split-leg support—eliminating pressure on the coccyx and promoting natural, dynamic sitting. It’s a genuine breakthrough in design, with the potential to reshape how we live and work.
New models now include built-in sensors, allowing the chair to function as a computer input device—opening up exciting possibilities in CAD, VR, gaming, and self-care.
Here is what Kunzler himself said recently about the evolution of the LimbIC chair
“I began with the brain: could we create a device—not necessarily a chair—that supports the body while following our thoughts, actions, and emotional states? The early idea was the ‘wearable seat’—a system that influences emotions, focus, and physical wellbeing while gently holding the body like a mother holds her child, allowing free and safe movement.
From there, I explored the relationship between body and brain, viewing the spine as an extension of the brain, and the body as an extension of the spine. I asked: could we design a chair that, through how it touches you, naturally evokes dynamic movement—like skiing?
This led to another question: what is the most balanced, free, and optimal human state? We asked people, studied literature and mythology, and found the answer—weightlessness, heightened touch, motion, self-awareness, and a fluid connection between body and mind. The kind of state people train for years through meditation or yoga, we found could be achieved in moments.
We built many prototypes—still housed at MIT—that gradually evolved into a minimal, supportive seat engineered to enhance emotional and cognitive states.
While traditional chairs begin with sitting and try to improve it through cushions and lumbar supports, they start with what’s inherently unnatural. Sitting, in its conventional form, is the problem.
We started instead with the brain—focusing on what nurtures wellbeing, inspires creativity, and enables a fuller, freer expression of who you are.”
